Understanding USDA Hardiness Zones
The USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map is the standard by which gardeners can determine which plants are most likely to thrive at a location. The map is based on the average annual minimum winter temperature, divided into 10-degree F zones.
Zone 3-4: Cold climates with late spring frosts (May). Common in northern states like Minnesota and Montana.
Zone 5-6: Temperate climates with April/May frosts. Covers much of the Midwest and Northeast.
Zone 7-8: Mild climates with March/April frosts. Common in the Southeast and Pacific Northwest.
Zone 9-11: Warm climates with minimal to no frost. Includes Florida, Southern California, and Hawaii.
